Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a medical procedure used to examine the inside of the colon (large intestine) and rectum. It is typically performed by a gastroenterologist, a doctor who specializes in digestive system disorders.
During a colonoscopy, you will be given sedation to help you relax and minimize any discomfort. The procedure involves the use of a long, flexible tube called a colonoscope, which has a light and a camera at the end. The colonoscope is inserted through the rectum and guided through the colon.
As the colonoscope is advanced, the doctor will carefully examine the lining of the colon for any abnormalities, such as polyps (small growths) or signs of inflammation. If any polyps are found, they can be removed during the procedure for further examination or to prevent the development of colon cancer.
In some cases, a small tissue sample (biopsy) may be taken for laboratory analysis. The entire procedure usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the findings and any necessary interventions.
Before a colonoscopy, you will need to follow specific preparation instructions provided by your doctor. This typically involves a clear liquid diet for a day or two before the procedure and taking laxatives or other medications to cleanse the colon.
It’s important to discuss any concerns or questions you have about the colonoscopy procedure with your doctor. They can provide you with more detailed information based on your specific situation.
